EDUCATION

In Delft, I co-design, co-organise and lecture in several BSc, MSc, and professional master courses. In addition, I also love to design and organise international study trips, particularly for professionals in the field. Supervising graduate and PhD research projects is a great part of my job, because it lets me work more personally with talented people with very diverse backgrounds. Finally, I am a grateful and returning lecturer at several universities in The Netherlands and abroad. Guest talks at Columbia University in New York City and Tongji University in Shanghai count as highlights in my career.

International Study Trips
NYU.jpg

Academic study trips are more than field trips to exciting cities. They are specifically designed to experience and actively learn about how things work in non-Dutch urban planning and development practices. When we are abroad, the (usually Dutch) professionals that join my trips are challenged to perform a mini case study and present their results on the final day of the program. This helps participants to get the most out of their journey--a learning experience to remember.

I have designed and co-organised trips to the following destintations:

International Study Trips 3-6 days

  • 2008, 2009 and 2011: Hamburg, Germany

  • 2010: Barcelona, Spain

  • 2012: Istanbul, Turkey

  • 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2017: Boston (MA) & New York City (NY), USA

From November 12-16, 2018, the destination of the international module of the Master City Developer program was New York City (NY). The module included visits to Pratt Institute, the City University of New York and New York University in NYC.

Next to the above, I also orgnised several single day study trips to the port city of Antwerp in Belgium. All trips have been planned and coordinated together with local universities, and included lectures from local academics, practitioners and other experts. After all, who understands a city beter then the people that work on it every day!
